Something hinky with that sentence, I fear. I took the liberty of checking SIYE and the same construction appears there; same goes for ff.net and ps.net.
That aside, I'm appreciating the chance to read this story yet again, in the hope that we're about to get some more of it made available. I have found some AU stories to be rather more palatable than others. In terms of "strong AU", by which I mean those with great big sweeping changes from canon, that's very few: this story and Elaithin's "Vires, Veneratio, Diligo" are my current favourites, and I'm awaiting updates to both with bated breath.

I'm rapidly posting this here so it's all ready for Ch28. You'll note I'm not promoting any of this to the front page or sending email notices out. The only place it might appear anyway is "recent posts" or under my stories list. Hmmm.
Anyway, posting things at PSnet required an extra beta stage, long after most of the rest was live. Once I got it through there, I copied-n-pasted it back to the other sites. So they should all match that one.
You're right, that sentence is broken. Once I get the remaining chapters posted over the next few minutes, I'll go back to the source material and figure out what got munged. Thanks for the catch. If you see others, please do speak up . . .

Found the point of change. The term used (mockery) is actually correct in spirit, but could be better in precise word selection. I'll prepare a patch, and that will go live Ch28. I hope to get that into beta this weekend, actually.
wishful thinking
I have a dream.....that one of the 4-5 times a week that I check in here, there will be an update for Echoes of Power. No nagging....I totally understand the 'real life obligations' thing.....just....wishful thinking.
