    Whew!

I had to read that one a couple of times before reacting. For a straightforward story, there's a lot going on. Is it a comment on revisionist history? A warning not to mistake the part for the whole? A critical eye on the history of a group that speaks Latin and features large hats? Or a fictional account of the eternal battle to separate truth from fiction?

In the end, I focused most on the "part for whole" theme. I'm not sure if that was your intention, or if I just chose to see a lot of that because the idea is so topical. There's definitely a clear theme of truth vs fiction and the true enemies vs those we create for ourselves, but in the end that idea felt like a foundational element to raise the "part for whole" question. I can easily imagine that a different reader, or the same reader in a different time, might think that one of the other themes is most prominent. That, really, is the beauty of it.

I wouldn't mind seeing more stories about this pair of mismatched heroes. But of course they never existed, so that seems unlikely.
