I wont boot up properly. I'm getting an error message about PTES but as I can't actually get in I can't begin to troubleshoot things. It's been booting up slowly recently so I did a new back up of EVERYTHING just in case.
I don't have anyone locally that I can use to fix it anyone any ideas where I can start? I have my Win 7 disk so I can to a complete install.
Its not the end of the world because I have this laptop and 2 XP machines but dam annoying.

Sounds a little like a
Sounds a little like a problem I have with one of the computers I have here. It started to refuse to boot up properly back in 2004. Six years later and its still not fixed due to lack of money since the problem beyond any doubt is something to do with the bios and the nature of the problem combined with the age of the computer makes reinstalling the bios a big problem leaving me with no choice but to get another motherboard. *grumbles*

My BIL is around for a while
My BIL is around for a while tomorrow so he's going to have a look at it. he knowledge goes beyond mine so I'm hoping he can at least point me in the right direction. Fortunately, if new hardware is required I can afford it, it just like to know what and how much. If the bill is too high then I might be taking the new pc/laptop approach.
Mine is about three years old so it might be a new motherboard for me too.
You don't want to know how
You don't want to know how old the broken computer here is. Hint: It doesn't meet the minimum requirements for WinXP. Anyways, in my experience, computer hardware can continue to operate properly for a lot longer then the standard 4-5 years that 'experts' claim. Its all some marketing ploy to get you to constantly buy something new.

Well, he's fixed it! After running vast numbers of tests it turns out that it is the USB stick for my wireless mouse that has been causing the problem. If I don't have it in when I'm booting up everything is fine. Let's hope that this solution lasts.
